Ohio e-bike regulations
Ohio law classifies electric bicycles (e-bikes) as bicycles, not motor vehicles, under Ohio Revised Code 4511.522 and 4511.01. E-bikes are divided into three classes (Class 1, 2, 3) based on motor assistance type and speed, mirroring the national model law. Riders are generally not required to have a license, registration, or insurance to operate a Class 1 or 2 e-bike, and e-bikes may be ridden wherever traditional bicycles are allowed unless locally restricted. Class 3 e-bikes have additional restrictions, including a minimum age of 14 and helmet requirements in some contexts. Local political subdivisions retain authority to further regulate or restrict e-bike use on their trails and roads.
