Alabama e-bike regulations
Alabama uses the national three-class e-bike system under Ala. Code § 32-5A-267. E-bikes with motors under 750 watts are treated as bicycles, so no license, registration, or insurance is required. Class 3 riders must be 16 or older and wear a helmet.
Overview
Alabama adopted the three-class electric bicycle framework in 2021 through Act 2021-134, now codified at Ala. Code § 32-5A-267. A conforming electric bicycle is not a motor vehicle, so it needs no driver license, registration, license plate, or motor-vehicle insurance.
E-bikes may use streets, bike lanes, and paths open to bicycles. Cities, counties, and land managers may further restrict e-bikes on sidewalks, multi-use paths, and natural-surface trails, so always check local rules before riding.

Age and helmet requirements for Class 3 e-bikes
