Federal Battery Safety Standards Reach E-Bike Retailers

Certification requirements for lithium-ion electric bicycle batteries and chargers are now reaching retail shelves, and several states have layered their own enforcement on top.

What is required

Batteries, chargers and complete systems sold at retail must carry accredited-laboratory certification. Uncertified imports are the primary target.

State follow-on

A growing number of states and large cities prohibit the sale or rental of uncertified units, with penalties escalating for commercial fleets and delivery operators.

What riders should do

Look for the certification mark on the battery casing, never charge on an exit path, and avoid aftermarket chargers that do not match your pack.
